Birmingham Hippodrome’s New Musical Theatre department has announced an exciting debut at the Edinburgh Fringe with their original climate crisis musical, Hot Mess. Premiering this summer, this vibrant romcom musical transforms the climate crisis into a tale of love, hope, and ultimate separation.
Crafted by the award-winning team behind 42 Balloons, this pop comedy musical delves into the tumultuous relationship between Earth and Humanity. After eons of searching, Earth finds its match in Humanity. Sparks ignite; prosperity blooms; technology advances. Yet what starts as a passionate romance soon spirals into chaos—a true Hot Mess.
Hot Mess marks Birmingham Hippodrome’s first foray into the Edinburgh Festival Fringe as part of their unique in-house New Musical Theatre Department, presented alongside Vicky Graham Productions.
Creators Jack Godfrey and Ellie Coote express their excitement: “We’re thrilled to premiere Hot Mess at the Edinburgh Fringe! The climate crisis is daunting and often paralysing to discuss. Our aim was to create a musical that highlights its urgency while being entertaining and relatable—even absurd at times. This romcom about Earth and Humanity—an unlikely romance spanning 200,000 years—invites audiences to fall in love with these characters despite their struggles.”
Deirdre O’Halloran from Birmingham Hippodrome adds: “We are delighted to debut at Edinburgh Fringe with Hot Mess. As our first workshop production in our New Musical Theatre Department, we eagerly anticipate sharing it on such a grand stage. Jack and Ellie’s blend of humour and music will spark meaningful conversations about one of today’s most critical issues.”
