Michael Flatley’s 25th Anniversary  Lord Of The Dance-Review

Remember Riverdance? Well Michael Flatley was a co-producer of that but then spun his own show off from it- Lord Of The Dance

I found myself in Birmingham’s Alexander Theatre, a regular venue I go to to see this show.

It was hard to ascertain from the show’s website who the cast were as they all deserved a mention.

I could hear segments of the audience cheering on specific performers in the cast, so obviously some friends and family. I could definitely hear shouts of Katie, which transpired to be Katie Coates from the Kidd School of Irish Dancing,

Matthew Smith played the title Role and gave a very good performance.

The show itself was not up to West End Style but neither was this an amateur production. Certain parts of the show worked really well but I felt there was too much a focus on the male parts and the females had a slightly lesser part. The digital screens providing the backdrop are either something which gives you glee or headache, depending on your perspective. I particularly liked the cast who played the violin parts, the music was played beautifully.

The show’s choreography was good for the male cast members but slightly less so for the female cast members, I got the sense the males were portrayed as the heroes such as the fight scene but with a world where there are strong, dominant females, I didn’t feel the show reflected this.

There was some references to Michael Flatley during the performance which added something to the story of the show.

The ending of the show was a bit haphazard, the sequencing of it could be better. Traditionally in a show, the audience cheers and an encore happens but not quite here.

The cast though ( names unknown) were amazing and the life they brought to the production was great.

I think though I will go to see Riverdance as I would like to compare both shows.
