I recently visited Birmingham Rep Theatre to see the production of What’s New Pussycat? A Musical incorporating Tom Jones’s Musical into a story surrounding the character Tom Jones.
My heart sank a little bit with Dominic Andersen’s performance as there was a musical number quite early on whereby his voice was faint against the orchestra’s noise. I did wonder at this stage, had they picked the correct person for this show? Was Dominic’s voice loud enough? Luckily by the end of the first act, I definitely knew Dominic was the right person for the role. He had a booming voice which came out. Therefore I can only assume there had been a technical issue or sound levels not quite set right early on.
Moving onto the show itself, the way Tom Jones’s music was incorporated into the show was very good. The scenery and lighting were outstanding and the show certainly took you into the 1960’s. The story was a little too imaginative at times and my own personal opinion is that they should re-write some of the wedding scene to incorporate more subtleties weaved throughout the show.
The superb choreography by Dame Arlene Phillips was evident in the show.
In terms of the actual cast members, there were definitely some who made you believe you were in the moment. When I say in the moment- I mean that it stops you thinking about the outside world and makes you believe you are witness to the events at the show, it takes you away from your normal life.
The audience I was with during the night definitely were livelier in the 2nd half of the show and gave them a standing ovation at the end of the show. There was definitely laughter from the audience with Lemeul Knights who played in the ensemble.
My particular favourite cast members were Mary Western who played Bronte, she transported you effortlessly in her duet and solo numbers to the 1960’s, she had a stage presence and was captivating
In addition Nathan Rigg’s expressions and acting were superb, he never once was out of character. Rebekah Hinds as the girl in the polka dot dress also was believable as her character, she owned this role and exuberates confidence in this musical.
The whole ensemble and swing were energetic and were top notch with their performances and without them, the show wouldn’t be what it was. My understanding is that the show is going to London in 2022 and it certainly deserves the West End.
Overall a fantastic show, with a brilliant set, a few minor tweaks with sound and the scene in the wedding being changed a little as a recommendation.
Each of the cast members should be thrilled with the production and its good to see so much energy and colours on stage. I hope this show continues to delight audiences far and wide.
