When You Think Of Amateur Theatre
Think of the premier league football clubs, they have academies to train the next stars of the future. Think of amateur or youth theatre in the same way, it enables people to hone their talents but also showcase their potential to a wider audience. When thinking of amateur theatre, you may think its not worth paying a ticket as the performances will be dire. However most amateur theatre shows I have seen, are nearly on par with professional theatre productions. Amateur shows do not have the big budgets like a lot of major theatre production companies do but they strive for the same quality as professional productions.
Grassroots Of Theatre- Theatreroots
Grassroots is often a term used in football, so try to think of amateur theatre as theatreroots. We at Theatre Village actively encourage amateur productions and it is great seeing very talented stars on the stage.
The Benefits Of Amateur Theatre
For a not very confident person, amateur theatre can be a great way of building your confidence. You meet, socialise and rehearse with people, developing your character along the way. You get to understand about body language, facial expressions, movement, tone of voice. You also get to perform on a stage in front of an audience. So, if there is a local theatre group near you, join? Or even start your own?
Amateur Theatre also has lot of local benefits, sponsorship opportunities exist, job skills to be added to your CV and some new friends.
One of the key benefits though is a route to becoming a performer, whether that’s in dance, singing or acting or all three. You build up experience and you are on the start of your career. You get to be seen by a wide range of people and build up your contacts and your own network.
Support Is Needed
However amateur theatre needs your support to be able to put on the productions and to survive. Times are tight now right for millions of people because of the cost of living. However, if you have spare money, please consider supporting your local theatre company. Such productions can be an enjoyable night out, cost usually less than professional productions and its something a whole family can enjoy.
Noda for example which stands for National Operatic and Drama Association NODA has many members who produce quality productions, year on year. Have a browse through their membership section to see theatre companies in your area.
Summary
Whether you are an audience member or performer, amateur and youth theatre play a pivotal role in the career of professional performers. It’s where talent is nurtured and showcased. Tiger Woods for example got to play golf at an early age and practiced their skill until world famous. A west end performer had to start somewhere. Please support amateur and youth theatre wherever you can.
