
Ey up. Sit thee down a minute — I’ve got a soft spot for a touring show, and I’m not shy about it.
There’s summat special about theatre that packs itself into a lorry and sets off. Touring shows don’t wait for the perfect night or the perfect crowd — they turn up wherever they’re booked, roll their sleeves up, and get on with it. One night it’s a packed house, next night it’s a handful of folk who didn’t quite know what they were coming to see. That’s where the good stuff happens.
When a show’s on tour, it learns how to listen. It changes its rhythm, sharpens its edges, finds new laughs and quieter moments. You can feel it in room — the cast and the audience meeting halfway, both of them giving it a proper go. It’s honest theatre. No hiding places.
That’s why I keep such a close eye on what’s travelling. Big names, small companies, brand-new work and shows that’ve been round block a few times and know exactly who they are. If it’s loading in, striking out and heading somewhere new, it’s likely passed through my satchel.
