Interview With Ben Fenwick-Miss Saigon

From Stage School to Saigon: Newcastle’s Own Ben Fenwick on Joining the Global Phenomenon

When Miss Saigon opens at Newcastle Theatre Royal this October, audiences will witness the beginning of a brand-new UK tour of one of the world’s most iconic musicals. But for one cast member, the experience is more than just another job – it’s a homecoming.

Local actor Ben Fenwick, born and raised in Newcastle, has landed a role in the ensemble of this epic production, presented by Michael Harrison in association with Cameron Mackintosh. Ahead of the show’s world-first stop in the North East, we caught up with Ben to chat about full-circle moments, fearless co-stars, and why Joseph was the spark that set him on the road to Saigon.

You’ve been cast in the new touring production of Miss Saigon. Take us back to the beginning – what first inspired you to pursue musical theatre?
I’ve always been fascinated by musical theatre and acting. I was introduced to Andrew Lloyd Webber’s work when I was really young, and by the time I was nine I’d joined stage school in North Tyneside. I stayed there for about eight years – it gave me confidence and shaped my skills. I loved getting involved in school productions too.

How does it feel to be stepping onto the Theatre Royal stage – not just anywhere, but your hometown?
It honestly feels surreal. Theatre Royal is the place that inspired me to chase this career. I remember being here to watch Joseph about 17 years ago – I was so small I didn’t even realise the show had started! That building gave me my first taste of theatre magic. I played the Theatre Royal for the first time last year with Heathers, and now to be returning for Miss Saigon’s Newcastle debut feels like a dream.

What excites you most about performing Saigon in front of a hometown crowd?
I can’t wait to hear the orchestra live eight times a week – that sound never gets old. Also, my friends and family don’t really know the show, so it’ll be exciting to see their reactions. And there’s something really special about Newcastle audiences – Geordies are so friendly, it lifts company morale during the tough technical rehearsals. Plus, I’m looking forward to grabbing some time at the coast whenever I can.

Miss Saigon is known for its sweeping ensemble numbers. What does being part of that storytelling mean to you?
The ensemble is so vital – we get to be playful and support each other in bringing the story alive. Bui-Doi is one of my favourite songs of all time – it’s incredibly moving, and being part of it is a gift. On top of that, I’m covering the role of Chris, which is a huge challenge but one I’m excited to take on.

You’re sharing the stage with stars like Seann Miley Moore. What’s that been like?
Seann is one of the most fearless performers I’ve ever worked with. Watching them is a constant reminder to be bold and make brave choices. It’s inspiring.

What’s been the toughest moment in rehearsals so far?
Definitely Dreamland. It’s right near the start, fast-paced, jam-packed with detail, props, and the revolving stage. Marrying all of that together is a challenge – but also exhilarating.

Looking further ahead, what are your dream roles or projects?
I’d love to do a Sondheim, especially Sweeney Todd. I’m also interested in screen acting and plays – I want to keep my options open and grow in different directions.

Finally, what advice would you give to young performers from Newcastle or other regional areas dreaming of a career like yours?
See as much theatre as possible – even the lesser-known stuff. Research the industry, read scripts and acting books (but keep it accessible), and definitely join a stage school if you can. Meeting like-minded people makes such a difference. And listen to lots of soundtracks – not just the obvious ones – so you can build a repertoire and find material that really speaks to you.

Miss Saigon runs at Newcastle Theatre Royal from Sat 4 – Sat 25 October 2025 before heading out on its major UK tour. Tickets will be available via theatreroyal.co.uk or the Theatre Royal Box Office on 0191 232 7010.
