Sass, Scars, and a Songbook: Lindsay Lucas-Bartlett Journey from Chaos to Curtain Call

Intro from Grace Hatchell, Theatre Village’s gossipy gal with a glittery satchel:

Pop the prosecco and brace yourself babes, because Lindsay Lucas-Bartlett is back—and she’s bringing big Essex energy to the Fringe with her award-winning solo musical Trust Me, I’m From Essex. Now, I know what you’re thinking—“Essex? At the Edinburgh Fringe?!” It’s gutsy, gritty, and gloriously gripping. Lindsay’s tale is one of survival, sass, and singing through the chaos—and if you’ve ever had a dream that felt miles out of reach, this one’s for you. So pull up a seat, grab a glittery tissue, and prepare to be shaken, stirred, and totally charmed.

Trust Me, I’m From Essex – a bold, brutally honest, and unexpectedly hilarious solo musical – is back at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe after scooping the Hollywood Encore! Producers’ Award at Hollywood Fringe 2023.

At the heart of the show is Lindsay Lucas-Bartlett, who grew up in Southend-on-Sea, dreaming of escape. Her childhood home, shared with a volatile bipolar father and a drug-addicted brother, was no fairy tale. Her early fantasies? Marrying Prince William (before the hairline crisis) or running off to L.A. Spoiler alert: she did make it to Los Angeles, but not before life threw a few grenades her way.

Trust Me, I’m From Essex is Lindsay’s autobiographical one-woman musical, directed by Lindsay Perry, with lyrics by Lindsay herself and music by E. Aaron Wilson. It takes the audience on a fast-paced ride through trauma, survival, and sharp-edged humour. Think kitchen-sink realism meets pop-fuelled resilience.

The show fearlessly tackles topics including bipolar disorder, domestic violence, drug abuse, bullying, dyslexia, and sexual assault—not with sentimentality, but with candour and wit. Lindsay doesn’t ask for pity; she demands your attention, your laughs, and maybe even your standing ovation.

With training from The Central School of Speech and Drama, Barcelona’s The Actors Space, and L.A.’s Upright Citizens Brigade, Lindsay brings a punchy mix of British grit and American stagecraft. Her previous work includes the award-winning web series This is Only Temporary and a winning monologue at MonologuesSlamLA.

But it’s Trust Me, I’m From Essex that’s truly cementing her as a fearless new voice in musical theatre. It’s unfiltered, funny, and full of heart—and it proves that sometimes, the only way to break free from your past is to belt about it centre stage.

Catch it. Cheer for it. And trust me—you don’t want to miss it, babes.
