At Theatre Village, we don’t aim to see everything. We’re not a factory pumping out hundreds of reviews with a stopwatch in one hand and a star rating in the other. We’re a one-person satchel operation, choosing shows with intention, care, and just a little bit of cheek.
Other sites might boast about covering xyz of the Edinburgh Fringe. Impressive, sure — but when you’re deciding at speed, things get missed. We’d rather take a different path. Every show we review has been picked, not plucked. Chosen, not churned. Although we sometimes do have space in our diaries whereby we will pick a random show, we call these our wildcards.
What Makes Us Different
- We champion the misfits. Debut writers, first-time performers, tiny budgets with big ideas — that’s our sweet spot.
- We’re curated. No scattergun reviewing here. If it’s in Theatre Village, it’s because we genuinely wanted to be there.
- We value originality. Whether it’s Lady Macbeth playing wing defence or a new musical about grief and ghosts such as Ghosted! The Musical, we’re here for theatre that takes risks.
- We engage deeply. We’re not just ticking boxes — we listen, laugh, lean in, and give every show our full attention.
How We Curate Shows
Our schedule starts before the Fringe opens. We look for:
- The spark. A press release or idea that makes us stop and think, “Ooh, now that’s interesting.”
- The underdogs. Artists without big PR teams shouting for them.
- The balance. A mix of musicals, comedy-horror, heartfelt plays, family shows, and sometimes even circus — because theatre should surprise us.
- The heart. If your show is burning inside you and demands to be seen, that’s what we want in our satchel.
We can’t see everything. But if we do choose your show, know that it wasn’t an accident. It was deliberate. It means we believed it was worth our time, our ticket, and our words.
For Performers
Want Theatre Village to review your Edinburgh Fringe show?
- Get in touch early (April–June is best for Fringe).
- Make it easy — send title, venue, dates, times, blurb, ticket link.
- Tell us why it matters — what makes your piece original, urgent, or unforgettable?
Even if we can’t cover your show this time, it doesn’t mean it isn’t good. It just means the satchel is only so big. But keep in touch — we love following shows beyond the Fringe too.
In short: Theatre Village isn’t about numbers, it’s about meaning. Every review is handpicked, heart-led, and cheering on the underdogs who make theatre magical.
