Well butter my crumpet and pop the kettle on – because there’s a heavenly smell of pie wafting into my postbag! And it’s no ordinary pie, loves… it’s Waitress, the smash-hit musical comedy, rolling back into town for a fresh UK and Ireland tour. And yes – it’s serving up a stop at Birmingham Hippodrome from Tuesday 28 April to Saturday 2 May 2026.
Tickets? They’ll fly quicker than a custard tart at a WI raffle. They go on sale to Hippodrome Friends from Thursday 25 September at 11am, and then the rest of us mere mortals can nab them from Friday 26 September at 11am.
Now for the cherry on top: Carrie Hope Fletcher – West End darling, author, vlogger, and all-round stage sensation – will be donning the apron as Jenna for a limited run. Carrie’s CV is as jam-packed as a Bakewell tart: Cinderella in Lloyd Webber’s Cinderella, Veronica in Heathers, Wednesday Addams on tour, Fantine and Eponine in Les Mis, not to mention Calamity Jane, Treason, Once and even War of the Worlds. She’s got more WhatsOnStage Awards than I’ve got stamps in my satchel, and that’s saying something.
For anyone who hasn’t had a slice before: Waitress is based on Adrienne Shelly’s 2007 film, with songs by Grammy-winning queen of the heartbreak banger Sara Bareilles. It’s directed by Tony Award winner Diane Paulus, with a book by Jessie Nelson and choreography by Lorin Latarro. Since its Broadway debut in 2016, the show has risen like the perfect sponge – from the Adelphi Theatre in London to Japan, Holland, Canada, Mexico and beyond.
At its gooey centre, Waitress is the story of Jenna – an expert pie maker stuck in a loveless marriage, dreaming of more. A local baking contest and a new doctor might just offer her a taste of freedom, but first she’s got to find the strength to believe in herself. Alongside her fellow waitresses (each with their own recipe for happiness), Jenna whisks up a tale of friendship, motherhood and self-discovery – all served with Sara Bareilles’ gorgeous tunes.
So mark your diaries, darlings. Birmingham Hippodrome is about to smell like pastry, sugar, and hope – and I, for one, will be first in line, fork at the ready.
