Right, my loves – put your phones down and perk your ears up because the bells of Notre Dame are about to ring out across Blyth, and trust me, you’ll want to be in the Phoenix Theatre to hear them.
Beaconsfield Musical Theatre are marching into town with The Hunchback of Notre Dame from 8–11 October, and it’s the sort of show that’ll make you laugh, cry, and probably hum all the way home (don’t worry, we’ll all be doing it on the bus).
Why I’m excited (and you should be too)
You know those productions that sneak up on you and then smack you in the heart with drama, music, and pure spectacle? This is one of them. With direction by the brilliant Shaunah Burge, music led by the powerhouse Susan Sabourn, and choreography from the dazzling Laura Morris Batey, this team aren’t messing about.
The characters you’ll meet
- Quasimodo, played by Kailum James – the bell-ringer with a voice and soul so big, you’ll want to climb up the tower yourself just to give him a hug.
- Esmeralda, brought to life by Kathryn Sabourn – fierce, fiery, and the kind of woman I’d happily follow into battle (or at least down the Bigg Market on a Friday).
- Frollo, played by Michael Douglas – not that one, sadly, but he’ll still chill you to the bone with his obsession.
- Phoebus, thanks to Alex Easten – the dashing soldier who makes you go “ooh hello” one minute and “oh no you didn’t” the next.
- And let’s not forget Clopin, the cheeky ringleader of the gypsies, played by Hannah Eldridge, who’s got enough wit and energy to power the whole cathedral.
The vibe
It’s Paris, it’s passion, it’s soaring music that’ll make the walls of the Phoenix Theatre shake (in the best way). The score blends that sweeping Disney magic with the grit of Victor Hugo’s original tale – so whether you’re in it for the feels or the fireworks, you’re sorted.
Grace’s little nudge
Now, I’ll level with you – ticket sales always need a boost for local theatre. And that’s where you lot come in. Don’t leave those seats empty! Nights like this are what make communities buzz. Plus, you’ll get bragging rights: “Oh yes, I saw Hunchback in Blyth – it was glorious.”

Final word from Grace
Here’s the thing: I was always a bit of a Quasimodo myself – a bit awkward, not quite fitting in, but stubborn as they come. And you know what? That’s where the beauty lies. This story is about finding your place, your people, and your fire. So come along, let the bells ring in your heart, and let’s give Blyth the standing ovation it deserves.
