Buckle up, theatre lovers — The Alexandra Birmingham has just dropped an Autumn/Winter season so packed with treats, surprises and gloriously chaotic stage magic that I nearly spilled my coffee rifling through my satchel.
We’ve got screen-to-stage premieres that will make any TV fan squeal, family shows to keep even the tiniest theatre-goers wide-eyed, and musicals so irresistible that you’ll be cancelling dinner, rearranging childcare and pencilling in extra applause breaks.
TV and film favourites take the stage
A trio of theatrical premieres are sailing into port for the very first time:
Midsomer Murders: The Killings at Badger’s Drift — expect charming villages, suspicious casseroles and more bodies than a police depot filing cabinet.
Fawlty Towers – The Play — please form an orderly queue for on-stage chaos, catastrophic customer service, and zero Waldorf salads.
Single White Female — intense, theatrical, and guaranteed to keep you gripping your armrest.
Family fun year round
If your brood needs entertaining through the colder months, The Alex has you sorted:
Horrible Histories – The Concert brings actors from the original TV series and enough gruesome gags to make the Tudors proud.
Bluey’s Big Play arrives next March, bringing Bluey, Bingo and the whole Heeler family to life through beautifully-crafted puppetry.
Annie returns for more heart and hope — if you’re not humming Tomorrow on the way home, you’re doing it wrong.
Musical magic
December at The Alex belongs to Fiddler on the Roof, staying a gloriously festive four weeks. With timeless songs like If I Were a Rich Man, Matchmaker and Tradition, it feels practically made for cold-weather theatre trips.
April brings a Birmingham style icon back: Legally Blonde, with Strictly sensation Amber Davies stepping into Elle Woods’ pink heels. Expect courtroom sass, poppy tunes and the energy of ten cappuccinos.
Atmosphere, drama and a few spectres
The Woman in Black brings its chilling illusions to Birmingham’s historic theatre in January. A haunted Victorian building watching a haunted Victorian play? Deliciously meta.
Later in the season, Agatha Christie devotees will rejoice as director Lucy Bailey and writer Ken Ludwig reunite for a fresh stage adaptation of Death on the Nile. If that doesn’t satisfy your dramatic cravings, The Shawshank Redemption follows, starring Joe McFadden, Ben Onwukwe and Bill Ward — bringing hope, injustice and institutional drama right to the stalls.
A final bow from Eastern opera royalty
Opera legend Ellen Kent presents a farewell tour after 33 remarkable years, with Madama Butterfly, La Traviata and Carmen sweeping into town. If you’ve never dipped your toe into opera, this is your big moment to sit back, feel fabulous and wallow in a glorious wall of sound.
Dance to make your heart sing
The UK’s most successful dance group, Diversity, kicks off their brand-new SOUL tour at The Alex. Robotics and AI are reportedly involved — and not a single audience member has yet resisted gasping mid-performance.
For the literature lovers
Dickens Theatre Company returns with Macbeth and Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde as part of Revision on Tour — perfect for schools, theatre buffs and anyone who enjoys a bit of Shakespearean treachery before lunch.
Tribute nights to warm the soul
If you like your theatre with a side of nostalgia, then clear your diary. Tributes to Sir Elton John, Whitney Houston, Luther Vandross, Elvis and more are ready to deliver the biggest choruses and the longest ovations.
