Grace Hatchell has barely got one foot in the underworld before the satchel starts rattling again. First Leicester. Then Sheffield. Then Sunderland. Honestly, if Hades needs a tour manager, they know where to find me.
The Tony and Grammy Award-winning musical Hadestown is officially heading out on its first-ever UK and Ireland tour in 2027.
Currently playing its third smash-hit year in London’s West End, the musical will leave the capital behind and take its haunting, hopeful, bluesy journey across the country, beginning at Leicester’s Curve from Friday 19 February to Saturday 6 March 2027.
Further confirmed dates include the Lyceum Theatre in Sheffield from Thursday 9 to Saturday 18 September 2027, and Sunderland Empire from Tuesday 9 to Saturday 13 November 2027.
So yes, petal, the underworld is going regional. Someone fetch Persephone a railcard.
Hadestown takes audiences on a journey to the underworld and back, intertwining two mythic love stories: young dreamers Orpheus and Eurydice, and King Hades and his wife Persephone. It is described as a deeply resonant and defiantly hopeful theatrical experience, inviting audiences to imagine how the world could be.
With music, lyrics and book by Anaïs Mitchell, and direction by Rachel Chavkin, Hadestown blends American songwriting traditions including indie folk, pop, blues and New Orleans-inspired jazz. It began life as an indie theatre project and acclaimed album before becoming the genre-defying musical now loved by audiences around the world.
And loved it certainly is. Hadestown won eight Tony Awards on Broadway, including Best Musical, as well as a Grammy Award for Best Musical Theatre Album. The Original Broadway Cast Recording has become one of the most streamed cast albums of all time, with nearly one billion streams to date.
Producer Mara Isaacs said the team is thrilled to bring Hadestown to audiences across the UK and Ireland, describing it as a show about “love and hope in the face of impossible odds” and adding: “Once you’ve heard it, you won’t be able to get it out of your head.”
Anaïs Mitchell also shared her excitement at the tour, saying the West End casts have shown that the songs feel at home “in every lilt and brogue”, and that she is thrilled to bring the story and music to audiences across the UK and Ireland.
Well, Grace can confirm that if a musical can survive London, Sheffield, Sunderland and Leicester, it has earned its sturdy boots.
Casting and the full creative team for the UK and Ireland tour are still to be announced, so there is more news to come. But for now, the road to hell appears to be paved with tour dates, box office queues and theatre fans quietly humming under their breath.
And really, isn’t that how all good journeys should begin?
