I found myself at this absurd comedy show as part of Birmingham’s Comedy Festival. ( https://www.bhamcomfest.co.uk/05oct_mayorandhisdaughter.html)
The setting was rather small and a hotchpotch of electrical wires, with a projector made the place seemed unruly and untamed.
This show delivered on absurdity with forceful instructions such as clap, take part or stand up .The shows characters were evident and the story made some sense. It was devised surely on back on a milk carton during one drunken evening? Despite its origins, the show managed to pull off a delightful chaos that kept the audience on their toes. During the performance they introduced the businessman and perfect timing, some audience members who were late arrived, were they the businessman? The audience were in stitches at this point.
The Mayor of the town was the forceful once with direct instructions. Meanwhile, his daughter oscillated between being the voice of reason and a whirlwind of mischief, often dragging unsuspecting audience members into her antics. The sketches ranged from the hilariously absurd to the outright bizarre—think juggling chickens while debating local council policies. It was this unpredictability that made the show feel like a rollercoaster ride through the eccentricities of life. The duo’s chemistry was palpable; you could almost hear their unspoken mantra: “If we can’t be famous for our talent, let’s just be infamous for our shenanigans!” And as they pranced around stage urging us to clap or join in their ridiculous rituals (I still don’t know what I was doing ), you realised you’ve signed up for something wonderfully chaotic. By the end of it all—after enduring a series of increasingly ludicrous scenarios—you found yourself not only laughing but also oddly rooting for these two hopefuls. If nothing else, The Mayor and His Daughter proved that sometimes it’s not about perfecting your craft but rather having enough heart (and sheer audacity) to entertain an audience who are more than willing to embrace silly fun over polished perfection. So if you’re after something fresh and ridiculously entertaining this season? Grab a ticket—but do leave your sense of normality at home! During the performance as predicted, the wires were trod on, causing the projector and a glass of wine to fall down- so they may wish to organize the wires better, then again the show was absurd and this is why they possibly had done it that way.
I had not realised the act had been at Edinburgh Fringe previously, they also have been Leicester’s sketch off finalists.
Just expected the unexpected with this pair, expect audience participation if you go and see them.
