So I popped along to Comedy Brunch today – an hour-long sampler platter of stand-up, served hot and fast with a rotating cast of comedians. Think buffet, but instead of mini sausages, you get 10-minute helpings of punchlines and awkward eye contact.
The compère kicked things off by saying they had five comedians “on paper,” which sounded suspiciously like some might have just been scribbled on the back of a napkin five minutes before curtain. Still, we got a solid mix – I managed to catch the names Patrick Monahan, Jake Patrick, and Matt Pugsley
There was also a female comedian with a ukulele – I didn’t catch her name unfortunately.
The room had a pretty big audience for a Tuesday afternoon – and yes, some brave souls were already on the pints. Legends. I was tempted, but I’d just had a coffee and felt dangerous enough.
Each comic brought their own flavour to the stage – from smooth to chaotic energy, observational to outright oddball. One common theme? A bafflingly large umbrella taking up a seat in the front row. Yes, the umbrella got more attention than some of the comedians. I hope it’s got an agent.
Now, humour is subjective. What makes me cackle might make you groan, and Fred next door hasn’t laughed since the Spice Girls split up – but that’s the beauty of a show like this. You’re bound to find someone who tickles your funny bone… and if not, you still get to people-watch a room full of half-tipsy strangers trying not to laugh-snort.
The vibe was relaxed, like a social club gathering – just without the tea and biscuits (missed opportunity, honestly).
It’s pay what you want, which makes it perfect if you’re skint but still want some top-tier Fringe fun. It’s a bit like Best in Class, but with more comedians and less time per comic – speed dating for stand-up, really.
All in all, it delivered exactly what it promised – a tasty taster of what’s out there at the Fringe. Five stars from me. Even the umbrella seemed to enjoy it.
