Coraline: A Darkly Magical Musical Experience At Birmingham Rep Theatre

Upon achieving global acclaim as a highly renowned bestselling literary work and a cult classic film, the thrilling tale of Coraline has now received a spine-tingling adaptation for the stage: Coraline – A Musical. Scheduled to take place at Birmingham Rep Theatre and sure to take audiences by storm in June of 2025, this remarkable production is bound to deliver a riveting experience unlike any other.

Based on the novel authored by the esteemed Neil Gaiman (renowned for his works such as The Ocean at the End of the Lane, Good Omens and Doctor Who), this stage adaptation is skillfully crafted by the award-winning playwright and screenwriter, Zinnie Harris. Additionally, the captivating music and lyrics for this uniquely family-friendly musical are composed by the talented British musician and songwriter, Louis Barabbas. While suitable for audiences aged 9 and above, this exhilarating musical adventure will first premiere in Leeds, before embarking on a tour to the cities of Manchester, Birmingham, and Edinburgh.

In the words of Neil Gaiman himself, “I am delighted that the story of Coraline has flourished beyond the pages of the novel – it has been reimagined as a film, an opera, and now, a musical. I am eagerly anticipating the release of this new adaptation.”

Helming the directorial duties for Coraline – A Musical is none other than James Brining (well-known for his work in productions such as Oliver!, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory – The Musical, and The Wizard of Oz). Marked by its hauntingly imaginative and visually striking world-building, this dark fantasy narrative will transport viewers to a mysterious realm entranced by the seductive yet deeply sinister “Other Mother”.

Initially published in 2002 by the esteemed British author, Neil Gaiman, Coraline gained widespread acclaim for its gothic charm and the empowering coming-of-age of its young protagonist. As the tale unfolds, young Coraline’s seemingly average life takes a turn for the bizarre, as she and her family move into a new house. Unbeknownst to her, she is about to embark on a journey fraught with danger, as she uncovers the unsettling truth behind her surroundings. From a leaking roof to peeling wallpaper, eccentric neighbours and aloof parents .

Everything seems off in Coraline’s new home. However, it is only when she discovers a mysterious door leading to a parallel “perfect” world that she realizes just how different things can be. Despite its seemingly idyllic nature, not everything in this world is what it seems, as every inhabitant possesses buttons for eyes – a fact that Coraline discovers with mounting unease.

According to Zinnie Harris, “Working with Gaiman’s text has been an absolute joy. The narrative has translated seamlessly into this epic adventure, wherein a young girl must brave her way through the most outrageous adversaries, relying on her inner strength and determination to emerge victorious.”
