I’ve always had a soft spot for youth theatre – probably because I was once part of it myself back in college. There’s something special about seeing young talent on stage, knowing they’re learning, growing, and maybe even taking their first steps toward a future career in the arts.
So when I spotted Juliet and Romeo on the schedule, I booked in without hesitation.
This reimagining of Shakespeare’s famous love story is a vibrant, high-energy take that mixes the classic tale with music, dance, and modern twists. With Edinburgh Youth Theatre’s talented young cast at the helm, the result is an upbeat, fast-paced, and memorable performance full of humour and heart.
From the moment the lights went up, the energy was non-stop. I enjoyed the creative use of props – a makeshift bed fashioned from a door was a clever touch – and even the backdrop transformed as the story moved through its scenes.
One of my favourite things about youth theatre is spotting future stars, and here there were plenty of contenders. The female character in a leather coat with a black hairband impressed me with her focus and consistency, never dropping out of character. Juliet’s female posse brought excellent comedic timing and little nuances that lifted their scenes beautifully.
Romeo was played with punky confidence – a bold choice – and while I personally would have liked a few more tender moments to balance it, I admired the commitment to a fresh interpretation. The rest of the cast worked hard and each performer added their own unique stamp to the story.
Edinburgh Youth Theatre should be proud of this production. It’s a celebration of creativity, teamwork, and youthful energy – exactly what youth theatre is all about.
⭐️⭐️⭐️ Its 3 stars from me.
