Modern reviewer. Fringe connoisseur. Partial to satire with a soprano.
There’s something quietly radical about choosing laughter over LinkedIn — and Escape the Rat Race! does precisely that.
Emily Davis delivers an elegantly anarchic debut in this one-woman musical comedy that trades glass ceilings for open skies, PowerPoints for power ballads. Directed by Paulus the Cabaret Geek and accompanied live by Andy Campbell Smith, Escape the Rat Race! is part satire, part soul-search — and, crucially, entirely human.
Whether you’re a recovering hustler or simply enjoy shows where the punchlines hit as hard as the high notes, this is one to add to your afternoon Fringe roster. Now, onto the official details…
The Office Escape You Can Actually Enjoy
Written and performed by Emily Davis
Directed by Paulus the Cabaret Geek
Accompanied by Andy Campbell Smith
This August, the Edinburgh Fringe welcomes a new kind of career crisis: sung.
Escape the Rat Race! is the razor-sharp musical comedy debut from Emily Davis — a witty, heartfelt reflection on ambition, burnout, and the wild fantasy of walking out mid-Zoom call and never looking back.
At the centre of the show is Blodwen, a bright-eyed Welsh graduate with skyscraper dreams and a caffeine-fuelled CV to match. But after a decade of status reports and “circling back,” she begins to question whether the next promotion is worth the price — and whether there might be more to life than quarterly KPIs.
Her turning point? A corporate sailing trip that doesn’t go quite to HR plan.
Armed with original songs, stinging satire and a surprising amount of self-awareness, Davis charts Blodwen’s journey from the high-rise office to high-seas escape, delivering laughs, goosebumps, and the quiet revelation that success might not look the way we were told it should.
Directed by Paulus the Cabaret Geek — a recognised champion of live performance and Davis’ long-time collaborator — and accompanied by Andy Campbell Smith, this production melds musical theatre and stand-up with wit and warmth.
This is Davis’ fourth appearance at the Fringe, and arguably her most personal yet — a performance that’s both disarmingly funny and gently radical. A show for anyone who’s ever rewritten a resignation letter in their head mid-meeting.
Whether you’re chained to the 9-to-5, already broken free, or just enjoy a good tune and a better punchline — Escape the Rat Race! promises a refreshing pause in the midst of August madness.
