I was fortunate enough to see this show at the Alexandra Theatre in Birmingham. Fisherman Friends is based on the true story of the Cornish singing sensations, Fisherman’s Friends, and the hit 2019 film about their life. When a group of Cornish fishermen came together to sing the traditional working songs they’d sung for generations, they hoped to raise a few quid for charity. Nobody, least of all the fishermen, expected their story to end on the Pyramid stage of Glastonbury.
It featured songs made famous by the band including Keep Haulin’, Nelson’s Blood, No Hopers Jokers & Rogues and many more.
This production was memorable to watch, each of the cast’s performances was tremendous. I felt I had been transported to Cornwall during this production, sitting on the Bay of Port Isaac in Cornwall.
The stage lighting was superb, alongside the acting and jokes, the music and singing was so fantastic.
This show is just embarking on a national tour, so make sure you go and see it. You might thank Theatre Village later.
The 2nd half of the show, I found more subdued and more poignant. Whilst the 1st half was more energetic and entertaining. One particular scene that could do with a little re-work was the lifeboat scene, the dialogue was a little lost and was not immediately clear what was being said.
The cast were excellent but some notable mentions go to Parisa Shagmir who plays Alwyn, her performance reminded me of the musical Once. She played this part so well but her singing was so lovely to hear, it had innocence with boldness. James Gaddas as Jim also deserves mention, playing a central character and doing it well. Fia Houston-Hamilton as Leah was also excellent and it would have been amazing if she had been given a song in the show somewhere. Dakota Starr who played Ben also deserves applause for his role and delivery. Hadrian Delacey playing Archie gave a stunning believable performance.
This show is a definite recommendation, go see whilst its on tour.
