My first evening at the Fringe and I found myself reviewing Mercury In Retrograde by Bobby Allan

This passionate folk-rock musical tells the stellar story of the Fool who, with his world plunged into turmoil, reaches out to his lost love, Luck

At the beginning of the show I was not quite convinced by the staging. I saw yes the performer, Bobby Allan but because this was a musical about mercury and the planets, I was expecting a bit more darkness. The moon was projected but the main stage lights were too bright to feel the effect, a dimly lit moon would have added more effect.

As the show developed, the story line was more prominent and there was original and wonderful music concocted, at one point I found myself tapping away without consciously doing it.

I’d loved Luck to be present on stage with Bobby but at times her presence did work. Bobby used simple stage props which were perfect for the show and storyline.

If you’re in Edinburgh for the Fringe, do yourself a favour and catch this show. Allan’s performance will leave you questioning your understanding of the cosmos and your place within it. It’s a truly spellbinding experience that shouldn’t be missed. The set design, though minimalist, complements Allan’s powerful performance, creating atmosphere that nearly transports the audience into the celestial realm. ( If the lights were dimmed)

It’s clear that this isn’t just a performance for him; it’s a labour of love that he’s sharing with the world. His vulnerability on stage is palpable, creating an intimate atmosphere that makes you feel as if you’re sharing a deeply personal conversation with a close friend.

it’s a life-affirming experience that will stay with you long after you’ve left the theatre. It’s a testament to the power of storytelling and the enduring human fascination with the cosmos. Don’t miss this extraordinary performance – it’s truly out of this world!

I can see potential for this show to develop to go on tour, it needs more lighting elements to do this but the music is good, the storyline is good , so go see it!
