I recently attended the Crescent Theatre in Birmingham, a venue I hadn’t visited for some time, and it was refreshing to return. I was there to see an amateur production of “Our House,” and here is my review. This musical began its tour at the Birmingham Rep Theatre, so it was delightful to know it was again on in Birmingham.
Starting with the positives, the set design and props were cleverly crafted, providing an excellent backdrop for the performances. The lighting design was also well-executed and effectively enhanced the show. Additionally, having a live band added a nice touch.
However, what detracted from the experience were significant sound issues during the first half of the production. Problems included actors’ voices being drowned out or microphones not functioning properly, resulting in interference noises like wah-wah sounds. Some actors’ voices were inaudible at times—issues that should have been identified during technical rehearsals. Although there were fewer sound problems in the second half, they still persisted.
In terms of staging, there were notable theatrical moments such as Joe Casey’s interaction with his mother in prison; this scene came together well with effective lighting and acting. The car driving scene and school choreography were also executed nicely.
Some cast members delivered commendable performances; Melanie Bateman stood out as Sarah with her convincing acting and singing skills. Emily Banks deserves particular praise for her role as Julie within the ensemble—her dance moves, expressions, and acting were impeccable. If she considers pursuing a professional stage career in future endeavours would be promising indeed! Katie Elliot’s performance alongside Emily Holtom’s superb portrayal deserves recognition too while Georgina Harley brought enthusiasm into her role admirably!
For this show to succeed fully though addressing these persistent sound issues is crucial since much effort goes into preparation behind-the-scenes—it’s vital that audiences can appreciate their hard work without distractions from technical faults! One audience member remarked after intermission about how unfortunate these disruptions had been which highlights importance resolving them promptly!
If the sound problems can be resolved then there are elements in this show worth seeing. This show is on for a limited time at the Crescent Theatre.
