Stop Dreaming, go see Dreamgirls at the Alexandra Theatre, Birmingham!

I arrived at the theatre from a spontaneous decision to go. I managed to catch this show on its opening night in Birmingham.

So please meet the Dreams – Effie, Lorrell and Deena – three talented young singers in the turbulent 1960s, a revolutionary time in American music history. The three friends embark upon a musical rollercoaster ride through a world of fame, fortune and the ruthless realities of show business, testing their friendships to the very limit.

It’s not a musical, I would normally attend as the generation used to this music is a bit earlier than my time. However something inside me urged me to go, and wow I was blown away.

The first 15 minutes, I thought Mhmm… not sure. However the story gradually built, the sets became more exciting and the performance from the cast was tremendous.

Featuring the classic songs ‘And I Am Telling You I’m Not Going’, ‘Listen’ and ‘One Night Only’, this sensational production of Dreamgirls had its critically acclaimed West End première in December 2016 at London’s Savoy Theatre, 35 years on from opening on Broadway.

The lead part was played by Nicole Dennis and wow she was magnificent!

The cast in this Musical were superb. Paige Peddie played Lorrell and Natalie Kassanga played Deena Jones who were both fantastic in their respective parts. Special mention to Brianna Ogunbawo playing Michelle Morris who gave a sterling performance.

I loved the character of Jimmy Early played by Brandon Lee Sears.

At the beginning of the show, I was wondering if there would be any glitter and boy did it come!

I have never seen such excellent lighting for a production, which for this production was done by Hugh Vanstone, the set design was also amazing done by Tim Hatley.

The person next to me was tapping their feet and laughing, so clear enjoyment being had by the audience.

The production standard in this show was set very high and for that alone, must be one of the top three shows I have ever seen.

Nicole Dennis though stole the show, she gave so much passion and energy and in one of her numbers, the crowd erupted into applause and also gave a standing ovation during the song. This is the first time I have witnessed that in Theatre.

So should you go see this show? The answer is a resolute yes, go see, go experience go enjoy!
