Before Edinburgh Fringe 2025 even began, Theatre Village made a bold move: we picked ten shows we believed in. We trusted our instincts, our satchel, and our knack for spotting what’s about to burst onto the horizon. And we weren’t wrong.
These were our Top 10 Recommended Shows for Edinburgh Fringe 2025 (in no particular order):
- The Unfair Advantage
- Lady Macbeth Played Wing Defence
- Lizzy Sunshine
- Penelope Quadrangle and The Power Of Friendship
- Jaffa Cake The Musical
- The Uncrackable Case
- Me and My Year of Casual Monasticism
- Ghosted: A New Musical
- Hot Mess
- Rodney Black: Who Cares? It’s Working
Some of these shows have already begun to blossom, catching the attention of audiences, reviewers, and programmers. Others are still seedlings—waiting for the right tour, festival, or producing partner to help them grow. But every single one has that spark: originality, spirit, and the ability to go further than a single August in Edinburgh.
At Theatre Village, this is what we live for. Our role isn’t just to review what’s in front of us—it’s to listen out for the tremors, the whispers, the quiet revolutions that signal a new wave is coming. We’re theatre spotters. We know the feeling when something fresh hits the stage, the goosebumps when an idea is bigger than its venue, and the certainty that some productions aren’t just passing through—they’re headed somewhere.
It’s a knack, really. A mix of instinct, curiosity, and the belief that great theatre doesn’t always arrive with flashing lights or five-star posters. Sometimes it starts small. Sometimes it’s messy. But if you know where to look, you can see the future unfolding on stage.
That’s why we published this list before the Fringe even started. We wanted to plant a flag, to say: these are the ones to watch. And now, with the festival behind us, we’ll keep tracking them as they grow. Because when the wider world catches on, you’ll be able to say:
“I knew them back when they were on the Theatre Village list.”
