As Hackney Empire celebrates more than 120 years at the heart of the local community, Artistic Director Yamin Choudury and the whole team are pleased to announce the full creative team and release rehearsal photos of this year’s 2023 Artist Development Programme (ADP) show UNmuted: A revolution has never sounded so good, which forms part of the theatre’s Creative Futures programme for 2023. The production will be performed at Hackney Empire on 12 August at 7:30pm, with tickets being sold on a ‘choose what you pay’ model.
The 2023 Artist Development Programme (ADP) show, once again sees a company of over 50 young artists and creatives, aged 14 – 19 years old, mentored by industry professionals, create and present a piece of new, original musical theatre in ten days, culminating with a performance on the theatre’s main stage.
This year’s production, UNmuted: A revolution has never sounded so good, is set in a world where music has been made illegal and will follow a group of young people trying to find a safe space, a secret space, where music can exist again, and where they can make plans to fight the power.
A fascinating description of the production reveals “In a world not so different from our own, a new law has been passed making music illegal.
By chance, a group of young people find a safe space, a secret space, where music can exist again, and begin plans to fight the power. However, as the group splits and tensions rise, they must quickly decide what is more important to them – protest or safety…“
The creative team for the production will be: Yamin Choudury as Director, Stella Odunlami and Kane Husbands as Associate Directors, Estrella Mabika as Young Writer in Residence, Ellie Fulcher as Dramaturg & Writing Mentor, Elizabeth Ayodele as Drama Practitioner, James Bokola as Drama Assistant, Ty Lowe as Head of Music & Co-Musical Director
The head of Learning & Participation Lorna McGinty said of this year’s production, “We are so excited to welcome a new ADP company into Hackney Empire for 2023. UMmuted is a bold and important story about young people taking a stand for what they believe in, and I’m really looking forward to seeing what this amazing creative team and incredibly talented company of young artists create from it.’.Writer Estrella Mabika said, “‘UNmuted is a piece set in an exaggerated version of the world but the messages can be relayed into our world, especially the power of the youth and the change they can make when they put that power to use. Everyone at Hackney Empire has been working extremely hard to tell this incredible story, this year’s ADP company are so talented I can’t wait for everyone to see them bring this story to life.'”
