Christmas at the Birmingham Hippodrome always feels a little magical, but this year’s production of The Nutcracker manages to go one step further — it’s enchanting, bold, and beautifully staged, with moments that sparkle and a few that simply glow. I was fortunate enough to attend and watch the production on its opening night.
From the opening scenes of Clara’s family Christmas party to the final, snow-dusted climax, the choreography is brilliantly executed. Every movement feels confident and considered, and the ensemble work is particularly strong. The costumes and performances are outstanding, full of colour and elegance, giving the whole production that classic festive grandeur audiences hope for.
One of the evening’s real highlights is the live 60-piece Royal Ballet Sinfonia, who bring Tchaikovsky’s iconic score to life with richness and warmth. The orchestra alone is worth the ticket — it’s a stunning soundtrack that elevates every scene.
The show’s storytelling follows the beloved tradition: Clara’s mysterious Nutcracker Doll, the late-night confrontation with the fearsome King Rat, the toy soldiers bursting into battle, and the magical journey through swirling snowflakes to an enchanting kingdom where Clara becomes the Sugar Plum Fairy. It’s full of wonder, nostalgia, and those “sit back and smile” moments that feel perfectly Christmassy.
While the production is undoubtedly strong, one or two parts in the second half dip slightly in energy, leaving a couple of scenes feeling a touch underwhelming compared to the first half’s momentum. It’s not enough to spoil the evening — more a gentle lull in an otherwise lively performance.
As ever, the Birmingham Hippodrome proves to be a great venue, with friendly, approachable staff who help keep the festive atmosphere alive from the moment you walk through the doors.
With daring swordfights, falling snow, a towering 30-foot Christmas tree and that timeless score, this is a production that blends tradition with a little theatrical magic. This should be a must-see festive treat

P.S. – Grace here, popping my head out of the satchel for a sec. I can confirm that Birmingham Hippodrome’s snow machine deserves its own Equity card, Clara’s party looked fancier than anything I’ve ever been invited to, and if King Rat tried that nonsense on my postal round, I’d whack him with a rolled-up panto flyer. Lovely night out, 10/10 would tiptoe downstairs for again
