There’s something quietly radical about a love story that refuses to shrink itself.
Polly: A 21st Century Love Story arrives at The Other Palace Studio this February as a one-night musical showcase, and on the surface it might sound like a familiar rom-com setup — popcorn, sparks, an old flame popping up at exactly the wrong moment. But this story doesn’t stay in the safe lane for long.
Polly is a plus-sized, polyamorous northerner living in London, and when a wedding invitation from her cousin Luke lands on the doormat, all the unspoken family expectations come with it. There’s an assumption — long held, never really questioned — about who she’ll bring on her arm. Rather than smoothing the edges or editing herself to fit, Polly makes a different choice and brings her girlfriend instead.
That decision sits at the heart of this musical. Part romantic comedy, part gentle act of rebellion, Polly asks who gets to feel “appropriate” in family spaces, and what happens when queer people stop playing by rules that were never designed with them in mind.
Written by Natalie Durkin, with music and lyrics by Joe Tapper, the show uses humour and heart to explore authenticity, love, and the politics of being seen. It’s contemporary, joyful, and unapologetic in the questions it raises — without losing sight of warmth or fun along the way.
The cast for this showcase brings together a wealth of musical theatre experience. Natalie Durkin leads the company as Polly, joined by Aaron Lee Lambert as Adam. They’re supported by Mark Anderson, Adam Colbeck-Dunn, Molly Lynch, Claudia Kariuki, Martin Callaghan and Daniele Coombe, forming an ensemble that promises both vocal power and emotional texture.
The workshop is directed by Amy Anders Corcoran, with musical direction by Jordan Paul Clarke, and is very deliberately positioned as a space to share the piece with industry professionals, early supporters and the community Polly speaks to, as the team builds momentum towards the show’s next stage of development.
Produced by Chris Darby for Daddy’s Money alongside Liam McIntosh Entertainment, this showcase isn’t about a finished product — it’s about invitation. An invitation to listen, to laugh, and to imagine where this story might go next.
For anyone drawn to new musicals, contemporary queer storytelling, or love stories that insist on being told on their own terms, this is a night worth noting.
