🎭 GRACE HATCHELL REPORTING FROM THE ROYAL MILE 🎭
Alright my darling theatre-lovers — polish your sporrans and warm up those whisky-holding hands, ‘cause this one’s got more pipes than a symphony and more flair than a ceilidh in a thunderstorm!
This August, the legendary Tolbooth Tavern (aye, the one built back in 1591 — it’s older than yer gran’s gran!) is hosting a show that’s pure Scottish soul: “An Ode to Rabbie Burns”. It’s a live, immersive, spine-tingling tribute to the nation’s beloved bard, wrapped up in poetry, piping, and proper scran.
We’re talkin’ five exclusive evenings of Fringe magic — August 1st, 12th, 19th, 24th, and 25th at 9pm sharp — where the tavern turns into a living, breathing poem. You’ll be welcomed by championship pipers (yes, real-life winners, not just blokes with kilts and dreams) — Liam from Shotts and Dykehead Pipe Band, and Chris of the Glasgow Police Pipe Band — who’ll rattle your ribcage in the best possible way.
There’ll be a live Address to a Haggis (aye, they toast it like it’s a king), followed by a dram of Craigellachie whisky to wash down every poetic word. Then it’s a live reading of “Tam O’Shanter” — and if that doesn’t stir your soul, wait ‘til the Cullen Skink hits the table. The night continues with a feast of Haggis, Neeps and Tatties, and finishes with Homemade Cranachan that’s creamier than a backstage diva’s dressing room mirror.
All this Fringe finery for just £43 a head — and it runs 1.5 to 2 hours, so you’ll get your fill of culture and carbs.
As Sophie Mallon, the brains behind the bash, put it:
“There’s nothing quite like a haggis toast in a centuries-old tavern.”
Too right, Sophie — see you there with a dram in one hand and a Burns sonnet in t’other.
