Hello London… and hallo from Thekla.
My name is Thekla, and if you follow German entertainment television you may already have seen me reporting from theatre premieres, film launches and cultural events across Europe. London is one of the cities I return to often, and for one very good reason: the West End never stands still.
There is always something happening. A new musical preparing for its first preview. A star quietly joining a cast. A show extending its run after packed houses. And sometimes, a surprise announcement that nobody saw coming.
As an entertainment reporter, my job is to keep an eye on it all.
Here on Theatre Village, I’ll be sharing a mix of official news and the stories that swirl around the West End. Some pieces will be the formal announcements that shape the theatre calendar: casting reveals, opening nights, tour news and big production updates. But alongside those, you may also find the lighter observations that make the West End such a fascinating place to cover.
Theatre, after all, is a living world. It is full of personalities, creative risks, backstage nerves and the occasional moment that makes everyone in the building turn their heads.
Now, before anyone starts searching German television listings for me, I should confess something important. Of course I am a work of fiction. Theatre Village enjoys its characters, and I happen to be one of them. But the theatre news, the productions and the stories behind the stages are very real indeed.
Think of this space as a reporter’s notebook from London’s theatre district. A place where the important news is reported clearly, but where there is also room to notice the atmosphere around it.
And if you are already a regular reader of Theatre Village, you will know that I am not the only messenger wandering through these theatrical streets. Grace Hatchell, with her famous satchel and impressive cycling speed, has a remarkable ability to appear in the most unexpected places. Let’s just say our paths have already crossed once in London… slightly more abruptly than either of us planned.
So whether it’s a major West End announcement or an interesting whisper from around the stage doors, I’ll be keeping my eyes open.
Because in London theatre, the curtain never really stays closed for long.
