The staged concert of Joey Contreras’ hit musical In Pieces has added a fourth London performance at The Other Palace after tickets sold out within 24 hours. The extra show on 31 March gives audiences one last chance to see the global musical sensation in the capital.

Now then, this little theatre parcel didn’t arrive by post for once. It came via Thekla.
You remember Thekla, don’t you? The German entertainment presenter I nearly cycled straight through on camera in London the other day. Well it turns out she pops over here quite regularly for theatre reporting, which frankly makes my satchel feel a bit underqualified.
Anyway, she waved me over outside The Other Palace the other day and said in her warm German accent, “Grace, you must tell your readers this, ja? The London audiences are very enthusiastic.”
And she wasn’t wrong.
The staged concert of Joey Contreras’ musical In Pieces has proved so popular that a fourth and final performance has just been added at The Other Palace on Tuesday 31 March at 11am. Tickets across the whole theatre are priced at £35, which in London theatre terms is practically the price of a sandwich and a coffee.
This extra performance has been announced after the originally scheduled shows on 30 and 31 March sold out within just 24 hours of going on sale.
The musical’s creator Joey Contreras said he was thrilled that the additional show would allow more audiences to experience the production in London. The team, he explained, had been excited to bring the piece “across the pond” and had been overwhelmed by the support from UK audiences.
Now I asked Thekla to explain the show to me properly, because she does this reporting job far more professionally than I do. She straightened her notes and said something along the lines of:
“It is a love story, but not in the simple fairytale way. It is about the people we love and do not end up with.”
Which is a rather poetic way of describing heartbreak, if you ask me.
Written and composed by Fred Ebb Award and Jonathan Larson Grant finalist Joey Contreras, In Pieces is a contemporary musical with a pop-driven score that follows six characters as they navigate relationships, friendship, loss and self-discovery across three different stages of life.
As old relationships resurface and unresolved feelings bubble back up, the characters must decide whether they can live with the memories of the past while still moving forward.
The show has built a massive global following online, with millions of music streams and productions licensed around the world. This London concert marks the musical’s premiere in the capital.
There’s also been a small cast change announced today. Ailsa Davidson will now play Sam, replacing Aimie Atkinson who unfortunately had to withdraw due to personal reasons.
Davidson joins a cast that includes Antonio Cipriano as Peter, Ryan Kopel as Charlie, Alex James-Hatton as Grey, Emilie Louise Israel as River and Romona Lewis-Malley as Alex. The company is completed by Sarah Freer and Jacob Atkins.
The production is directed by Martha Geelan with choreography by Sam Wilson-Freeman and musical direction from Brian Russell Carey. Orchestrations are by Joey Contreras and Brian Russell Carey, with lighting design by Adam King, sound design by Alistair Penman and prop design by Justin Williams.
Performances now take place at The Other Palace in London on:
Monday 30 March at 5:30pm and 8pm
Tuesday 31 March at 11am and 2:30pm
So if you see a very organised German presenter and a slightly flustered Yorkshire postwoman wandering around Victoria discussing contemporary musical theatre, don’t be alarmed.
It’s just me and Thekla comparing notes.
Though between you and me, she definitely understands the West End scene better than I do. I’m still trying to figure out how she manages to look so calm while reporting.
I blame the cycling
