Get ready to experience a spellbinding journey of community and self-discovery with British Youth Music Theatre’s (BYMT) latest production, Unbound. This brand-new musical, penned by the talented Matthew Harvey, promises an electrifying mix of 80s pop-rock, magic, and heartfelt storytelling. Set to debut at Birmingham Hippodrome’s Patrick Studio from 16 to 18 August, Unbound is a must-see for fans of musical theatre, 80s nostalgia, and magical adventures.
Unbound is Harvey’s debut stage musical, and it’s making waves with its unique blend of big choruses, big hair, and even bigger magic. The story revolves around home-schooled Iris, who finally convinces her mother to let her attend Black Lake High. Expecting a typical high school experience, Iris’s world is turned upside down when she accidentally frees an ancient witch and becomes part of a coven. The narrative explores whether Iris’s newfound powers will help her fit in or lead to chaos in the town of Beggars Hollow. Through BYMT’s partnerships with local schools, Unbound features two young performers from Birmingham among a cast drawn from across the UK. This diverse and talented ensemble brings Harvey’s vision to life, creating a production that is both locally grounded and nationally significant.
Matthew Harvey, known for his work on Now or Never and as a finalist in the 2021 Stiles and Drew Best New Song Prize, brings his musical prowess to Unbound. His previous accolades, including the MGCfutures Bursary and role as Associate Artist at The Barn Theatre, highlight his dedication to the craft. Harvey is joined by a stellar creative team. Director Sarah Schostack, known for Spin (Edinburgh Fringe/Arcola), and Choreographer Steven Moore, acclaimed for his work on Urinetown the Musical (Lost Nation Theater), lend their expertise to the production. Together, they aim to create a theatrical experience that resonates with audiences of all ages.
Matthew Harvey expressed his excitement about the production: “I couldn’t be more excited to be working with BYMT to bring Unbound to life this summer. As a composer, seeing BYMT lead the charge to develop and nurture new musical theatre fills me with hope for the future.” He adds, “Unbound is what happens when you combine Stranger Things, Stephen King, Hocus Pocus, and an 80s rock band. I hope audiences will enjoy watching the show as much as I’ve enjoyed writing it. With the help of our nearly 40-strong cast of talented young people and live rock band, I hope we can bring some magic, both literal and figurative, to the stage in Birmingham.”
With its captivating storyline, dynamic score, and a cast brimming with young talent, Unbound promises to be a highlight of the summer theatre season. Mark your calendars for 16 to 18 August and join us at the Birmingham Hippodrome’s Patrick Studio to witness the magic of Unbound. Whether you’re a fan of musical theatre, 80s rock, or simply love a good story about finding your place in the world, this is one production you won’t want to miss.
