An energetic, subtly humorous production of a Strindberg masterpiece
Miss Julie begins as a flirtatious game between the daughter of a landed
Swedish aristocrat and Jean (Chris Agha), her father’s, somewhat common,
but well-travelled footman. Over the course of a long and sultry Midsummer’s
Eve, the game plays out and gradually descends into a shifting battle for
survival.
ELTC’s production respects both the potential for comedy, as well as tragedy
in Strindberg’s writing, as Jean attempts to build on his humble origins and
improve his social standing, Miss Julie (Maria Naterstad) seeks solace from
her dysfunctional upbringing by mixing with the servants.
Performed in the round, with a stripped back set, this intimate, viscerally
energetic production refuses to allow Katrin (Lia Goresh), Jean’s fiancé, to be
a passive onlooker to the unfolding drama. This is Lia’s first involvement with
ELTC, whilst Maria Naterstad and Chris Agha both performed with ELTC, in
Stuart Slade’s BU21(September 2023) – Director, Jon Fentiman’s MFA final
dissertation show at East 15
Expect a rollercoaster of emotions as Strindberg’s tragedy springs to life with
both tears and laughter.
