New Shows Added to The Rep’s Sparkling 2024/2025 Season

The Birmingham Rep has unveiled exciting additions to its already stellar lineup for the 2024/25 season, promising audiences a diverse array of entertainment ranging from comedy to gripping drama and family-friendly productions.

Kicking off the new additions is “The Merchant of Venice 1936,” a striking reinterpretation of Shakespeare’s classic, starring Tracy-Ann Oberman as Shylock. Set against the backdrop of 1930s Britain, this production explores themes of resilience and societal tension, offering a fresh perspective on a timeless tale. Directed by Brigid Larmour, it promises to captivate with its impactful storytelling and historical resonance.

Celebrating Black History Month, The Rep will host “COBO: Comedy Shutdown” on October 19th, featuring a lineup of top comedians including Kat B, Michelle de Swarte, Nabil Abdulrashid, and Limahl Germain. This special evening, curated by LuvEntertainment, guarantees an uproarious experience filled with laughter and camaraderie, perfect for a night out with loved ones.

In a blend of Hitchcockian suspense and comedic flair, “Rotten” takes the stage on November 15th and 16th. Written by Josie White and directed by Rikki Beadle-Blair, the play follows three aspiring actresses whose ambitious plans take a humorous turn when they stumble upon a scandalous opportunity involving an Instagram celebrity. Expect a rollercoaster of mishaps and unexpected twists in this thrilling new production.

From January 27th to February 1st, audiences can immerse themselves in “Birdsong,” starring Max Bowden of EastEnders fame. Adapted from Sebastian Faulks’s poignant novel, this production marks its 30th anniversary with a poignant portrayal of love amidst the horrors of war. Produced by Original Theatre, known for their acclaimed adaptations, “Birdsong” promises a gripping journey through passion, loss, and resilience on the battlefields of World War I.

Returning by popular demand, David Pugh’s acclaimed production of “Pride and Prejudice* (sort of)” graces The Rep’s stage from February 3rd to 8th. Winner of the Laurence Olivier Award for Best Comedy, this irreverent retelling of Jane Austen’s classic romance combines wit, music, and modern twists that promise to delight audiences anew.

For families, “The Worst Princess” enchants audiences from April 23rd. Presented by Full House Theatre and based on the bestselling book by Anna Kemp and Sara Ogilvie, this whimsical production follows Sue, the self-proclaimed Worst Princess, on an adventure filled with dragons, towers, and unexpected friendships. With catchy tunes, puppetry, and a larger-than-life dragon, it’s a magical experience suitable for all ages.
