If you’re looking for something spine-tingling this spooky season, the People’s Theatre in Heaton has just the ticket. This October, audiences can expect tense psychological drama in Enlightenment and hair-raising supernatural suspense in The Ghost Train (Revised) — two shows guaranteed to keep you on the edge of your seat.
First up, from 13–18 October, comes Enlightenment, a gripping psychological thriller from Northumberland-born playwright Shelagh Stephenson. When backpacking student Adam goes missing overseas, his mother and stepfather are left consumed by grief, desperate for answers. Then, out of the blue, their son appears to return home. But is he really who he claims to be?
Part mystery, part psychological study, Enlightenment digs deep into themes of grief, love, faith and truth. It’s unsettling, intense, and certain to linger in the mind long after the curtain falls.
Then, from 21–25 October, the theatre turns back the clock for a reimagined version of a true classic. First staged in 1925, Arnold Ridley’s The Ghost Train has been chilling audiences for nearly a century. This revised edition keeps all the thrills and sly humour of the original, while giving it a fresh twist for today’s audiences.
The story follows a group of travellers who miss the last train of the night and find themselves stranded at a remote station. Warned by the Station Master of the terrifying legend that haunts the waiting room, they decide to spend the night anyway… and soon regret their decision. With suspense, laughter and plenty of ghostly goings-on, it’s no wonder The Ghost Train remains a much-loved favourite.
So, whether you prefer the psychological tension of Enlightenment or the eerie thrills of The Ghost Train, the People’s Theatre has something to satisfy your appetite for drama this October.
Tickets for both productions are available now from the People’s Theatre Box Office on 0191 265 5020 (option 2) or online at www.peoplestheatre.co.uk.
