I went, watched and reviewed 101 Dalmatians at the Birmingham Alexandra Theatre, this show has just begun its tour of the UK.
This iconic tale of furry friendship and villainous villainy has been reimagined for the stage, and Marsh’s portrayal of the lovable and determined Cruella de Vil has left me in awe. With her powerful vocals, captivating stage presence, and undeniable charm, Marsh has brought a fresh spin to this iconic character, making her a standout in this delightful production. You will see why this musical adaptation is a must-see for families.
Firstly the scenery and stage effects were well put together, elements of surprise throughout the show added excitement. There were at times the show felt a bit like a pantomime and there was definite sillier moments, which was aimed more at the younger members of the audience.
With any review, I always try to give a shout out to the performers. The lead characters in this production were very strong and the clever use of puppetry kept this tale alive. I did find one scene a little too long in terms of dialogue but the rest of the show flowed. There was some funny jokes which got the audience laughing. I’d say the 1st half was more enjoyable as the 2nd half was quite predictable.
The Musical is a heartwarming treat for the whole family. So, grab your tickets and get ready to be spotted in the audience, cheering on the Dalmatians as they take centre stage in this unforgettable musical adventure.
Playing a villain is a delicate art, requiring a deep understanding of the character’s motivations and a willingness to embrace their darker qualities. For Kym Marsh, taking on the role of Cruella de Vil in 101 Dalmatians The Musical was a thrilling challenge that pushed her to explore new depths as a performer. In her portrayal of the infamous fur-obsessed socialite, Marsh had to tap into a sense of malevolence and entitlement, bringing a sense of menace to the stage that was both captivating and unsettling
The theatre-going public will be paws-itively hooked! This is a show that is a treat for the whole family, but aimed more at children. It’s on for a limited time at Birmingham Alexandra Theatre, so get booking!
