Review Of Hanan Issa- Halal Habibis At Edinburgh Fringe

I found myself at this intimate gig to see Hanan, wasn’t quite sure what to expect but it was billed as a comedy and therefore I expected some laughs. The signage in the venue was not brilliant.

I was surprised at the setting of this show, as you may know many Muslims do not drink alcohol and this place was a bar. Whether that will affect audience size, I am unsure.

This show was part autobiographical/ part humourous and certainly had audience members laughing. The jokes were not designed to offend or cause embarrassment, this was genuine heartfelt jokes at Hanan’s situation and encounters.

Themes resonated with the audience about belonging, identify, hope and delusions.

I felt from this performance Hanan’s was still searching for her role in the world, with an exploration on social media and being an outgoing person, she was a person who wanted to try lots of things. Hanan’s quest is still growing but I got the sense no definite goal had been set by her, shes taking each day, month and year as it happens.

The show as I said is part autobiographical/ part comedy in an intimate setting. It’s worth going to the show to hear Hanan’s story and her thoughts/reflections. Don’t expected a spontaneous comedy show where audience members are roasted or one liners, this show is not designed like that. It delivered though on understanding and finding your purpose.
