Grace Hatchell here, reporting straight from the frontline of fierce fringe favourites and theatre that bites back! Word’s out—and it’s louder than a corner shop at midnight—that The Chaos That Has Been and Will No Doubt Return is storming the UK after an award-scooping, sold-out run at Edinburgh Fringe. Think post-2008 Luton, two best mates on the razz, and a system that wants to swallow them whole. Chalk Line Theatre’s latest is part Berkoff blitz, part Under Milkwood gone rogue—proper gritty, properly gorgeous. If you like your theatre lyrical, lippy, and laced with truth, don’t miss this one. Honestly, it’s like someone bottled rage and poetry, shook it up, and let it explode on stage.
Following its award-winning, sold-out debut at the Edinburgh Fringe, “The Chaos That Has Been and Will No Doubt Return” is set to embark on an exciting UK tour. This compelling production by Chalk Line Theatre is set against the backdrop of post-2008 financial crash austerity in Luton. It tells the poignant story of two best friends clinging to joy amidst a world designed to stifle them. Garnering accolades such as Best New Writing (Besties Awards – Fest & Skinny Magazine 2024) and Best Individual Performance (Olatunji Ayofe, Theatre Weekly), it was also a finalist for The List Awards 2024. The play weaves a lyrical tapestry of violence, defiance, and hope, drawing comparisons to Steven Berkoff’s “East” with elements reminiscent of an anti-lyrical “Under Milkwood,” as noted by Lyn Gardner from The Stage.
Set over one tumultuous night in austerity-stricken Luton, the narrative follows two friends navigating youth’s highs against systemic neglect’s harsh backdrop. What begins with noughties hits and corner shop gin soon spirals into a raw exploration of friendship, violence, and survival in real-time. With biting wit and lyrical intensity, this production delves into class struggles, identity issues, and generational rage while capturing universal themes of transition during life’s uncertainties.
Known for their incisive political storytelling, Chalk Line presents an urgent yet poetic production packed with swagger that explores youth’s beauty amidst environmental harshness. It unfolds rapidly with linguistic vigour against nostalgic tunes’ backdrop amid street violence and neighbourhood austerity.
Writer Sam Edmunds draws from personal experiences growing up in Luton alongside extensive conversations about knife violence’s impact on vulnerable young people from working-class towns. This exploration highlights how misdirected anger can lead to catastrophic events within neglected socio-economic areas.
Directed by multi-award-winning director Sam Edmunds—founder/co-artistic director at Chalk Line Theatre—and co-director Vikesh Godhwani; both bring their expertise alongside Movement Director Jess Tucker Boyd; designer Rob Miles; composer Matteo Depares—all contributing significantly towards this impactful piece.
In addition to performances across various venues nationwide comes an impactful programme addressing knife crime intervention supported by Ben Kinsella Trust reaching thousands throughout Britain through educational outreach initiatives led collaboratively between theatre company members themselves!
