Humpty Dumpty’s had a great fall in Edinburgh it seems… but was it an accident, or something far more sinister? That’s the yolky mystery at the centre of The Uncrackable Case, a delightfully bonkers musical courtroom drama where nursery rhymes meet Netflix crime doc energy.
Jill – yes, that Jill, of hill-climbing fame – finds herself on trial for egg-icide, accused of knocking poor Humpty off his perch. Defending her is none other than BB Wolf, while Little Red is out for vengeance, the press is circling like hawks, and fairy-tale land is in chaos.
This show is packed with clever references, comic timing, and a smart script that’s performed by four incredibly talented female performers. They juggle multiple characters with ease and deliver some cracking (sorry) musical numbers that had the audience grinning throughout.
Now, I’ll be honest – when I saw the courtroom setting, I braced myself for something a little dry. Courtrooms and comedy aren’t always the best of bedfellows. But to my surprise, this show takes a potentially static format and absolutely runs with it – turning it into a zippy, witty, and well-paced production. No courtroom drag here, just full-throttle fun.
The cast play familiar faces – Little Red, BB Wolf, the Three Pigs – and do it with style. (Side note: I was half-expecting the pigs’ houses to blow over mid-scene, but thankfully, the set held firm.)
The show is clean, clever, and family-friendly, with language that’s accessible for all ages. It would work well for children and grown-ups, though for younger kids especially, I think a few more visual flourishes would elevate the experience: bolder costume design for Jill, more dynamic lighting, and perhaps some shifting backgrounds to really draw us into each scene. Of course, Fringe limitations often make that tricky – those 15-minute get-ins don’t leave much room for magic tricks.
Still, the performances? Flawless. All four cast members deliver standout moments with both acting and vocals. You can tell this is a team that works brilliantly together – confident, tight, and full of fun.
If the show plans to tour (and frankly, it will), I’d love to see it grow – maybe bring in a few more fairytale ensemble characters and a bit of interactivity for the kids. It’s so close to being a 5-star show already… honestly, it’s just a flick of a magic wand away.
For now, it’s a well-earned 4 stars from us – a fantastic, family-friendly Fringe show with bags of potential.
