When the Godfather of Theatre Village makes a list, you don’t just read it — you clear your diary, book your tickets, and pray your stamina can keep up. These ten shows have been handpicked from the thousands on offer this Fringe, each with that spark of brilliance, originality, or sheer theatrical chutzpah that makes them impossible to ignore. This list was created prior to the Fringe starting so unfortunately Lizzy Sunshine has now ended, but still was one of our top 10 shows.
From musicals that make you laugh till your mascara runs, to plays that punch you square in the feels, here’s your hit list for Edinburgh 2025:
1. The Unfair Advantage
Australia’s leading sleight-of-hand magician Harry Milas will reveal the secrets behind the skill that saw him become a security weapon for the world’s top casinos.
2. Lady Macbeth Played Wing Defence ★★★★★
Forget the blood, the crown, and the sleepwalking — this Macbeth has a netball bib on. A wild, clever, and athletic take on Shakespeare’s most ambitious anti-heroine.
3. Lizzy Sunshine ★★★★★
The kind of show that makes you grin like you’ve swallowed a sunbeam. Heartfelt, funny, and quietly profound — bring tissues, just in case.
4. Penelope Quadrangle and The Power of Friendship ★★★★★
Ethical decisions live on stage? A friendship that could survive the apocalypse? This playful, thought-provoking piece proves that loyalty is never simple.
5. Jaffa Cake: The Musical ★★★★★
Is it a cake? Is it a biscuit? Is it the most ridiculously fun show you’ll see this Fringe? Yes, yes, and yes. A sugar rush of joy.
6. The Uncrackable Case ★★★★
Part mystery, part comedy, all genius. This whip-smart whodunnit keeps you guessing (and giggling) till the final reveal.
7. Me and My Year of Casual Monasticism ★★★★★
A tender, surprising solo piece that takes you from domestic chaos to quiet spiritual revelation — all without leaving the stage.
8. Ghosted: A New Musical
Romance, loss, and a few spectral surprises — this fresh, fun musical has a haunting charm that lingers long after the curtain falls.
9. Hot Mess ★★★★★
Messy, magnetic, and utterly unmissable. A full-throttle Fringe triumph that had Theatre Village scribbling five stars without hesitation.
10. Rodney Black: Who Cares? It’s Working
Darkly comic, dangerous, and impossible to look away from. The kind of show that gets people talking… loudly.
While some other reviewers tiptoe around, waiting to see who’s flavour of the month, Theatre Village stuck its neck out long before the Fringe even kicked off. This list was locked, loaded, and proudly posted before a single flyer hit the Royal Mile — and we’re standing by it 100%. No fence-sitting here, darling. If we back a show, it’s because we believe in it… and we rather enjoy being proved right.
This isn’t just a list — it’s a survival guide. These shows aren’t just worth seeing, they’re worth rearranging your entire Fringe schedule for. If you only see ten productions this August, make them these. The Godfather has spoken.
