I was fortunate enough to attend Vagabond Skies: The Van Gogh Musical.
I sat back and soaked in my London-style evening – except, readers, I wasn’t in the West End. I was right here in Edinburgh.
Created by Sussex-based team Tony Norman and Mark Edwards, this production tells the dramatic story of Vincent van Gogh’s life as an artist. What I saw was a condensed version, but I could easily have stayed for more.
This was an absolutely excellent show – stunning vocals and exceptional performances from the entire cast.
Van Gogh is played by Alex Bloomer, who completely makes the role his own. He captures the character beautifully and delivers a vocal performance that’s nothing short of fantastic.
An inventive digital projection backdrop added depth to the story, scene changes were swift, and everything about the production felt polished. Lighting was well used, props carefully chosen – this is a show that knows exactly what it’s doing.
Surely this is bound for a tour… or even the West End?
If I were to suggest an improvement, it would be to bring the whole company together earlier. The opening scenes focus on individuals – but when the entire cast joins forces, the energy and brilliance jump to another level.
The title song, Vagabond Skies, was my standout Fringe moment – beautifully written, sung to perfection, and powerful enough to give me goosebumps.
Book now, and you won’t be disappointed.
