Selling the family cow for a handful of beans would earn most of us a very frosty reception at home. In pantomime, thankfully, it earns you a leading role and an adventure above the clouds.

Greenwich Theatre has announced the cast for Jack and the Beanstalk, which runs from 27 November 2026 to 10 January 2027. Expect magic, music and a considerable gardening problem.

Anthony Spargo returns for his 13th Greenwich pantomime, writing the show and stepping into the role of Dame Dotty Trott. Thirteen festive seasons! By now, he must have heard “It’s behind you!” more often than most of us have heard the doorbell.

The production follows Greenwich’s success at the UK Pantomime Awards 2025, where the theatre scooped Best Script and Best Pantomime. No pressure on those beans, then.

Joining Spargo is Sam Bailey as Jack Trott, with Eleanor Fransch playing magical fairy helper Bumpkin. Paul Critoph takes on Sheriff Sprocket, Lydia Bell plays his daughter Jill, and Georgia Grant becomes Fleshcreep, the giant’s evil tax collector. Even up in Cloudland, apparently, somebody wants a slice of your earnings.

When Jack and his mother fall on hard times, they must sell their beloved cow, Pat. A little unexpected magic later, an enormous beanstalk appears, offering Jack a route to Cloudland and the chance to change their fortunes. Unfortunately, there’s a giant standing between him and a happy ending. You never get that sort of detail in the property particulars.

The ensemble features Jake Griffiths, Yevai Benyure, Elise Harris and Ben Davies, as Greenwich Theatre continues its partnership with neighbouring Trinity Laban to give emerging performers their moment on stage.

James Haddrell directs, with musical direction from Greenwich favourite “Uncle” Steve Markwick. Jana Lakatos designs the set and costumes, while Henry Slater provides the lighting design.

The theatre promises a fresh take on the familiar fairy tale, bringing together laughter, music, spectacle and a few surprises. There’s certainly plenty of scope for trouble when your shopping list says “sell cow” and you return with something better suited to an allotment.

Jack and the Beanstalk plays at Greenwich Theatre, Crooms Hill, London, SE10 8ES. Tickets start at £23.75, with an age recommendation of three and above. The running time is approximately two hours and 20 minutes, including an interval.

Best practise your boos. That tax collector won’t heckle herself.

Tickets: Book through Greenwich Theatre.
