Alright pet, pull on your black-and-white scarf and get ready for a proper belter — because Gerry & Sewell is storming back into the Toon next year, and I’m already gannin’ radgie with excitement.
From Tuesday 9 to Saturday 13 June 2026, Newcastle Theatre Royal will once again become a sea of stripes when Jamie Eastlake’s Olivier Award-winning stage adaptation of Jonathan Tulloch’s The Season Ticket makes its big, bellowing return. If that name sounds familiar, it should — it’s the story that inspired the cult Geordie film Purely Belter.
Last year, Gerry & Sewell had the Royal bouncing like it had just won the league. We’re talking a sell-out run, wall-to-wall Wor Flags, and enough roaring applause to shake Grey Street. And this is after already selling out at Laurels Theatre in Whitley Bay (2022) and packing the house at Live Theatre (2023). Clearly, the Toon can’t get enough of these two Gateshead lads and their big daft dream — to get season tickets for St James’ Park.
The plan? Keep out of trouble (sort of), dodge the social, and blag their way past charvers and scrap merchants, all while holding onto a friendship that’s tougher than a night out in the Bigg Market. Football might be at the heart of it, but trust me — this show’s about far more than the beautiful game. It’s about grit, graft, and chasing something that matters.
The much-loved cast is back too — Dean Logan and Jack Robertson returning as the unforgettable Gerry and Sewell, Becky Clayburn as Tyneside herself, and Erin Mullen reprising her knockout turn as Bridget McCarten. Oh, and expect live music, puppet dogs, and that electric Geordie pride that makes the hairs on your arms stand up.
As Jamie Eastlake himself says, “This one’s for the Toon.”
I’ll say it’s for anyone who’s ever had a dream — but if you’re from round here, you’ll feel it in your bones.
