The 2025 production of “Macbeth” at the Lyric Hammersmith Theatre will be directed by Richard Twyman, Artistic Director of ETT. Alex Austin will take on the titular role, with Lois Chimimba as Lady Macbeth. The show opens on 5 March, following previews from 28 February, and runs until 29 March. This production follows a successful UK and international tour in 2023/2024 that reached over 40,000 viewers.
Twyman and Executive Producer Sophie Scull expressed their excitement about bringing this rendition to London audiences with Austin and Chimimba leading the cast. They anticipate that viewers will find both familiarity and provocation in this contemporary interpretation of Shakespeare’s classic tragedy.
The narrative explores a nation in turmoil where the Macbeths seize an opportunity for power but face unforeseen consequences as dreams turn into nightmares. This modern adaptation examines themes of violence and corruption within society while questioning why “Macbeth” continues to resonate deeply today.
Alex Austin’s extensive theatre credits include performances at venues such as Shakespeare’s Globe, Hampstead Theatre, Young Vic, Royal Court Theatre, Arcola Theatre, Soho Theatre, Gate Theatre, Almeida Theatre among others. His screen work spans popular series like “Doctor Who,” “Sherlock,” and films including “The Bike Thief.”
Lois Chimimba has performed at esteemed theatres like National Theatre and Almeida Theatre; her television appearances include roles in series such as “Doctor Who,” “Top Boy,” and more.
Richard Twyman has been Artistic Director of ETT since November 2016 after serving as Associate Director (International) at Royal Court Theatre where he collaborated globally with playwrights. His directorial achievements include award-winning productions during his tenure at RSC along with various acclaimed projects across international stages.
