In Her Defence is heading to Camden Fringe this August, bringing audiences a bold, heartfelt and hilariously British new musical set against the colourful backdrop of 1987.
Written by Harrison Cranfield, the original British musical comedy combines eccentric characters, sharp humour and an emotionally driven story about resilience, friendship and finding the courage to stand up for yourself.
At the centre of the story is Donna, a fiery single mother whose world is suddenly turned upside down when she discovers her husband’s affair. What begins as a devastating personal revelation quickly develops into a chaotic custody battle, leaving Donna fighting to rebuild her life while protecting the people she loves most.
Of course, keeping anything private in a close-knit neighbourhood is easier said than done.
As gossip travels faster than the morning post, Donna finds herself navigating solicitors, awkward encounters, unexpected allies and the opinions of seemingly everyone around her. Fortunately, she isn’t facing it entirely alone, with a sharp-tongued best friend and a decidedly questionable postman among the colourful personalities accompanying her through the turmoil.
Behind the comedy, however, lies a story with plenty of heart.
In Her Defence explores what happens when somebody who has spent much of their life dealing with the expectations of others finally begins to find their own voice. Donna’s journey becomes one of self-discovery as she learns that standing up for herself might prove just as important as winning any battle taking place around her.
The production embraces the distinctive spirit of 1980s Britain, using its 1987 setting to create a world filled with recognisable social dynamics, larger-than-life personalities and plenty of period charm.
An original musical score accompanies the story, blending wit and warmth as the production moves between laugh-out-loud comedy and its more emotional moments. Rather than losing sight of its characters beneath the humour, In Her Defence aims to make audiences care about the people at the centre of the chaos.
Writer Harrison Cranfield explains:
“I wanted to create a musical that feels unmistakably British: funny, heartfelt and rooted in characters audiences can recognise and connect with. At its core, In Her Defence is about finding strength in difficult circumstances and discovering that your voice matters, even when everything around you is trying to drown it out.”
That balance between comedy and sincerity sits at the heart of the production. While the eccentric personalities, neighbourhood gossip and awkward situations provide plenty of opportunities for laughter, the story also tackles themes of family, friendship, resilience and the difficult process of starting again when life doesn’t quite follow the expected script.
It also places a strong female voice firmly at the centre of its story. Donna isn’t presented simply as somebody caught up in circumstances beyond her control; her journey is about discovering her own strength and learning that she has the right to be heard.
With memorable musical numbers, colourful characters and plenty of 1980s British charm, In Her Defence looks set to offer Camden Fringe audiences an entertaining mixture of comedy and emotion.
For those who enjoy original British musical theatre, character-led comedy and stories celebrating strong female voices, In Her Defence could be one to add to the Camden Fringe list this August.
