I’ve Got a Special Delivery: Breakups, Botox and Much Crazy About Nothing

Alright, lovelies. I’ve delivered some awkward things in my time, but I draw the line at knocking on somebody’s door and announcing that their relationship has been cancelled by the sender.

Apparently, I’m missing a business opportunity.

Much Crazy About Nothing takes place in a world where professional breakup agents are hired to end relationships on their clients’ behalf. I can barely get people to answer the door when I’m holding something they actually ordered, so I’ve questions about the working conditions.

Written by Vietnamese playwright Lan Maika, this surreal comedy returns to London on 3 and 4 November 2026, when Shhh Theatre Company brings it to The Playground Theatre as part of Voila! Theatre Festival.

I’ve been having a rummage through the details, and there’s rather more in this particular envelope than a neatly worded goodbye.

For a start, the boundaries between doing a job, putting on a performance and feeling something for real begin to unravel. Into that comes AI, plastic surgery, race and the glorious mess of modern relationships. I’m expecting the sort of emotional paperwork that requires a second biscuit before you even attempt the first page.

The premise has caught my attention because there’s something painfully recognisable beneath the absurdity. How much of ourselves do we put into looking composed, saying the right thing and managing everybody else’s feelings? And what happens when we decide that even the most personal conversation can be handed to somebody else?

I’d be particularly interested to see where the professional mask slips. Delivering somebody else’s words is one thing. Finding yourself tangled up in the feelings behind them sounds like an entirely different round.

The production promises social satire alongside its surreal comedy, with moments of unexpected tenderness woven through the chaos. That last detail has me leaning a little closer. I do like the prospect of a play making me laugh before quietly finding the tender spot I thought I’d tucked safely away.

Shhh Theatre Company is an emerging, London-based, Asian female-led collective whose work explores intimacy, modern relationships and emotional tensions. It combines text, physical performance and visual storytelling, moving between everyday life and the inner psychological world. For this return, the company has continued developing the piece with Lan Maika, bringing its cross-cultural perspective to the comedy.

There’s already been a warm reception. Both performances of the London premiere at Camden People’s Theatre in July sold out, and Theatre to See London awarded it four stars, praising its inventive theatricality, unpredictability and emotional core. A Shiny Life For Me! also described it as an entertaining and funny surreal comedy.

I haven’t seen it myself yet, but a premise this peculiar, with something human beating away underneath, is enough to earn a place in my postbag.

Here’s what I’d pop in the diary:
