A review of Hometown from Edinburgh Fringe. College is the best four years of your life! So, what happens when it ends? What was supposed to be a relaxing trip to a small town ends up turning Alex, Mallory, Stella and Bailey’s lives upside down. Navigating big dreams, lost hopes and even a little bit of romance, this world premiere from Los Angeles Theatre Initiative and an ensemble from Northwestern University brings to life everyone from an eccentric florist to a mysterious old man to help these four friends figure out what comes next. Who knows? Maybe the answers are closer than they think.
I saw this show and was impressed by the quality of the performances by the actors. There was a lot happening on stage and at times a little hard to focus on everything, however the stage space was limited and the show would work better on a larger stage area. The actors were spot on in their delivery and enormous amounts of hope were part of this show. The energy and enthusiasm of the young cast were palpable, infusing the performance with a vibrant, infectious spirit that captivated the audience.
Despite the constraints of the small stage, the actors demonstrated remarkable skill in utilising the limited space, their movements and interactions carefully choreographed to maintain a sense of fluidity and dynamism throughout. The script itself was a delightful exploration of post-university life, striking a chord with many in the audience who could relate to the characters’ struggles and uncertainties. The witty dialogue and poignant moments were delivered with impeccable timing, showcasing the cast’s strong comedic abilities and emotional range. Particularly noteworthy was the ensemble’s chemistry, which lent authenticity to the friendships portrayed on stage. The supporting characters, from the quirky florist to the enigmatic old man, added depth and colour to the narrative, each one memorable in their own right. While the cramped stage occasionally led to moments of visual overload, it’s exciting to imagine how this production could flourish in a larger venue. The potential for even more elaborate staging and movement is tantalising, and one can’t help but feel that this talented group could take their performance to even greater heights given more room to manoeuvre. A worthy use of your time!
