Grace Hatchell was sorting through the morning’s deliveries when one particular envelope caught her eye. It had a little Yorkshire spirit about it. Being a Yorkshire lass herself, Grace always perks up when news arrives from “up our way”, and this one came with a story full of grit, laughter and a skateboard or two.
Inside the satchel was news of Sisters360, a lively new family show inspired by the true story of three sisters from Hull who challenged stereotypes through skateboarding. Grace couldn’t help but smile at that. “From ’Ull, you say?” she murmured to herself. “Well now, that’s a proper Yorkshire tale if ever there was one.”
Sisters360 rolls into its UK tour from March to June 2026, bringing with it a joyful story of determination, sisterhood and daring to dream big. The play is written by award-winning playwright Asif Khan, known for work with the Royal Shakespeare Company and Arcola Theatre, and is produced by Turtle Key Arts.
At the heart of the story are step-sisters Fatima and Salima, played by Sara Abanur and Farah Ashraf. The two girls are a dedicated skateboarding duo from Bradford who dream of winning the Tiny is Mighty competition and following in the footsteps of Olympic skateboard star Sky Brown. But life, as Grace knows well, rarely runs in a straight line. When their parents begin discussing separation and the possibility of living in different cities, the sisters face the fear of being torn apart. Through it all, their love of skateboarding becomes the thing that keeps them grounded and rolling forward together.
What makes the story even more special is that it is rooted in real life. The play draws inspiration from the “Hijabi Sisters” of Hull – Layna, Maysa and Amaya – whose passion for skateboarding while wearing hijabs captured national media attention. Their story inspired Asif Khan to write a show that reflects the reality of British Muslim girls growing up today, while celebrating confidence, identity and ambition.
Theatre Village knows how powerful it is when young audiences see themselves represented on stage. Sisters360 does exactly that. It places hijab-wearing girls right at the centre of the story as funny, determined heroes of their own adventure.
As Khan has explained, growing up without seeing people like himself represented on television or stage left a mark. Writing Sisters360 was his way of ensuring the next generation sees themselves reflected in stories that celebrate their identity and their dreams.
The production has been created with authenticity in mind. Costume designer Erin C Guan ensures the hijab is represented naturally as part of the characters’ identities, while the show captures the energy of youth culture and the thrill of skateboarding.
Grace reckons this is exactly the kind of story family theatre needs more of. A bit of heart, a bit of humour, and a reminder that sometimes the most inspiring stories come from ordinary people doing extraordinary things.
And if those stories happen to come from Yorkshire? Well, that just makes Grace all the more proud.

Grace folded the press release neatly and tucked it back into her satchel. “A proper Yorkshire story,” she said with a grin. “Skateboards, sisterhood, and girls from Hull showing the world what they’re made of. That’ll do nicely.”
