Grace Hatchell Reports: A Theatre Show That Knows You Better Than Your Therapist? Welcome to The Waiting Room…
Let me paint you a scene: You step into a room. It’s quiet—strangely quiet. Someone hands you a message. It’s from your future self. And just like that, you’re no longer in Edinburgh. You’re inside your own imagination… guided by a very clever (and possibly all-knowing) AI.
Welcome to The Waiting Room, darlings – one of the most daringly brain-bending experiences heading to this year’s Edinburgh Fringe. After a successful test run in NYC with two boundary-pushing theatre collectives—Angry Fish Theatre and The Ally Artists Group—this immersive, AI-fuelled theatrical event is ready to warp minds and rewrite stories at C Alto (Studio) from August 4–16.
You know me, I like a nice programme, a gin in a plastic cup, and a storyline with a beginning, middle and end. This show? It tears up that rulebook and feeds it into a chatbot.
What’s It About Then?
In The Waiting Room, you’re not just watching a story—you are the story. Audiences step into a liminal space (fancy talk for somewhere between here and there) and receive a secret message from their future self. Using next-level AI, the show responds to your choices in real-time, crafting a personalised, audio-led tale filled with forks in the road, strange futures, global crises, and “oh no, did I just do that?” decisions.
No two experiences are the same. One minute you’re pondering the butterfly effect of your teenage heartbreak, the next you’re navigating a climate catastrophe. You may leave changed—or at least very quiet on the walk home.
It’s like Black Mirror met Sleep No More, then swiped right on an AI philosopher with a God complex.
Theatre Meets Thought Experiment
This is theatre for the soul-searchers, the thinkers, the “I just want to feel something real” crowd. It’s part interactive fiction, part philosophical game, part “wait, am I in a simulation?” moment.
Trigger warnings do apply: themes of war, loss, and big existential questions. Not one for a hungover midday slot, unless you fancy crying into your oat latte.

Grace’s Final Word:
In a sea of shows shouting for your attention, The Waiting Room whispers directly into your ear—and possibly your soul. If you’re into bold tech, bespoke theatre, or just want to see what the future might hold (without logging into Meta), this one’s a must.
So… what would your future self say?
Until next time, keep your imagination curious and your satchel full.
