This festive season, How It Ended and artsdepot are thrilled to present an imaginative and brand-new theatrical adaptation of Hans Christian Andersen’s beloved tale, The Fir Tree. Bursting with movement, live music and song, enchanting foley sound effects, and delightful puppetry, this heartwarming production is packed with lessons and adventures for the entire family. It beautifully reminds us of the enduring power of friendship, the legacy of great stories, and the joy of living in the moment.

Celebrating 180 years since its original publication, this story follows a little fir tree who dreams of adventure and yearns to grow up quickly. Never content with its current blessings—the sunlight, wind, or forest friends—the young tree wishes only to be bigger and older. These universal themes resonate deeply today as they did back then: promoting mental health awareness, wellbeing, and environmental responsibility.

From the creative minds behind Wild (Unicorn Theatre) and The Little Gardener (UK Tour), How It Ended brings their ambitious style to children’s theatre as part of artsdepot’s 20th anniversary celebrations. Written by Teresa Burns and directed by Eva Sampson—with Ellie Isherwood on composition & sound design; Ryan Dawson Laight on set & costume design; Nicola Crawford on lighting design; and Tom Espiner as Foley Consultant—this production promises a magical experience.

Teresa Burns shares her excitement: “We’re incredibly proud to present a new adaptation of The Fir Tree this Christmas in collaboration with our local theatre artsdepot. Our goal is to create an inclusive festive show accessible to all. When I first read The Fir Tree’s story it resonated profoundly with me—its themes remain relevant today: connection through storytelling and cherishing each moment.”

Designed with neurodiverse audiences in mind—all performances are Sensory Adapted ensuring everyone can enjoy this enchanting show including those with sensory sensitivities or learning disabilities!
