This one didn’t come through the front door. Lark Rise to Candleford rehearsal update

A small, unmarked package slipped quietly into the 2nd Act Courier network, passed hand to hand, rehearsal room to sorting office, with strict instructions not to ask questions and definitely not to log it in the system. Naturally, that made it far more interesting.
Inside were rehearsal glimpses from Lark Rise to Candleford, the moments before everything settles. The leaning in. The listening. The feeling-around in the dark before a story finds its light.

This new adaptation, written and composed by Tamsin Kennard and based on Flora Thompson’s book, is a co-production between the Watermill Theatre and the Theatre by the Lake, in association with Hammerpuzzle Theatre Company, and it feels rooted in memory rather than nostalgia.
At its heart is Laura. A girl growing up in the quiet rhythms of Lark Rise, where time moves gently and everyone knows everyone else. It is safe. It is warm. But it is not quite enough. When the long-promised journey to Candleford finally comes, Laura steps into a faster world — one full of new voices, new expectations, and the thrilling discomfort of possibility.
What struck me most from what passed through my satchel is how much this production leans into ensemble storytelling. Actor-musicians share the space, the music woven directly into the narrative, as if the memories themselves are being played back in real time. It feels communal, lived-in, and deeply human.
The cast includes Rosalind Ford as Dorcas Lane, Christopher Glover taking on Father and Uncle John, Zrey Sholapurkar as Godfrey Parish, Rosalind Steele as Mother, Jessica Temple as Laura, and Alex Wilson as Edmund. Around them sits a creative team clearly invested in atmosphere as much as story, with direction by Bryn Holding and design, lighting, sound and movement shaping the world Laura inhabits and the one she yearns towards.
Lark Rise to Candleford plays at the Watermill Theatre from Friday 6 February to Saturday 14 March, before transferring to Theatre by the Lake from Thursday 26 March to Saturday 18 April.
Some parcels are loud and demanding.
This one whispers — and those are usually the ones worth leaning closer to
