Artistic Director Yamin Choudury and the whole team at Hackney Empire are pleased to announce further details of new shows on sale for 2023, running from April to October – with comedy, music, opera, theatre, and family entertainment from across the UK and the world.
Hackney Empire will be welcoming an array of big name comedians including The Mash Report & Taskmaster star Nish Kumar in Live at the Empire with Nish Kumar (21 April) with special guests Bridget Christie, Sarah Kendall, Celya AB and Fin Taylor; the dynamic duo James and Fuhad behind the Spotify top three podcast ShxtsNGigs with their The Log Cabin tour (10 & 11 May); Fary: Aime-moi sit u peux (7 June), a new stand-up comedy show by Fary – the first comedian to be produced by Netflix in France; Seann Walsh in his newly renamed tour Seann Walsh: Back From the Bed (15 September) and one of Variety’s Top Ten Comics to Watch, Matteo Lane (20 & 22 October).
Hackney Empire will also be welcoming musical guests including legendary Sri Lankan artists Amal and Namal (2 April) with an evening of Suresh Maliyadde’s music and Andy and the Odd Socks’ bringing some true sock’n’roll (15 April).
CBeebies will be uniting with the BBC Symphony Orchestra for their fun-filled family musical ocean adventure, CBeebies: Ocean Adventure with the BBC Symphony Orchestra (1 July). The concert will see CBeebies friends JoJo, Gran Gran and Andy as they search for endangered creatures, find out fascinating facts, and collect sounds and pictures for the audience’s musical ocean scrapbooks. The magical multi-media event will feature CBeebies theme tunes, orchestral treats, live action film and animation with a few surprises along the way.
English Touring Opera will bring two operas to Hackney to kick off their autumn season: a new production of Monteverdi’s The Coronation of Poppea (30 September), directed by Robin Norton-Hale with multi-genre musician and composer Yshani Perinpanayagam as conductor and arranger and a new English translation of the libretto from poet and Classicist Helen Eastman and a new production of Rossini’s retelling of Cinderella, La Cenerentola (7 October), helmed by director and movement specialist Jenny Ogilvie and conducted by Naomi Woo. Both productions will be designed by Linbury Prize Award-winner Basia Bińkowska.
