The Alexandra Stage Experience Unveils The Sound of Music

This August, The Alexandra, Birmingham, is set to dazzle audiences with its 19th Stage Experience production of The Sound of Music, featuring over 70 young talents from across the Midlands. From Thursday, August 15 to Saturday, August 17, these young performers will bring one of the world’s most beloved musicals to life.

The Sound of Music, the final collaboration between Rodgers & Hammerstein, is renowned for its timeless songs, including “Climb Every Mountain,” “My Favourite Things,” “Do-Re-Mi,” and the iconic “The Sound of Music.”

This year, Stage Experience at The Alexandra received an unprecedented number of applications, with over 400 young hopefuls vying for a spot. After a rigorous audition process that saw 161 auditionees, 76 performers were selected to participate. They will undergo an intensive two-week rehearsal period before taking the stage in August.

In addition to performing, Stage Experience offers opportunities for young people to work behind the scenes. This year, 14 technical participants will join The Alexandra’s technical team, gaining hands-on experience in the backstage workings of a large-scale production.

The lead role of Maria will be played by 21-year-old Molly Hopkins from Solihull, who expressed her excitement: “I am thrilled to be taking on the role of Maria in The Sound of Music after a competitive audition process. I was last in Stage Experience back in 2022, when I played Ms. Greta Bell in Fame, and I can’t wait to be back on stage at The Alexandra bringing this classic musical to Birmingham audiences. We will be busy rehearsing across two weeks in August to get the show ready before the curtain rises on opening night, but I’m eager to get started and spend time with my castmates.”

Co-producers Becky Peers (Theatre Manager), Victoria Ellery-Jones (Marketing Manager), and Hannah Whitfield (Customer Experience Manager) shared their enthusiasm: “As Stage Experience celebrates its 19th production this year, we are excited to bring The Sound of Music to the stage. This is the first time the show has been performed as part of our much-loved summer project and the creative team have assembled a cast of over 70 performers who will be lighting up the stage this August. Offering aspiring performers and hopeful theatre technicians a springboard into the industry, Stage Experience is a highlight in our yearly calendar. We can’t wait for audiences to see the talent of the future right in the heart of Birmingham this Summer.”

Don’t miss the opportunity to witness the future stars of the stage in this enchanting production of The Sound of Music at The Alexandra, Birmingham.
